Developing the social skills and improving the self-esteem of students is the key to enabling success. When a student first begins at West Midlands Education and Skills, their skills and learning styles are assessed by completing a Transition Plan with the student and using the Education and Health Care Plan and information from previous schools. From this, we create an Individual Learning Plan.
After this their programme will typically involve social activities, for example playing board games or sports, or visiting nature centres, art galleries and museums. This allows the learner to build a trusting relationship with their tutor and allows the tutor to discover how they learn best before gradually incorporating more academic work. The relationship between the student and their tutor is fundamental; we consider the student’s past experiences and personality before placing them with a suitable experienced and well-qualified tutor.
